National Briefing 1/29

I painfully regret the devastation that the recent reports have caused to the citizens of Detroit, to my co workers, to the Mayor's family and to my family and friends," Beatty wrote in the letter.

Kilpatrick spokesman James Canning said the mayor's office had no comment.

There was no immediate response to messages seeking comment from Elliott Hall, a lawyer for Beatty.

A prosecutor launched an investigation last week into the allegations, which came to light when the Detroit Free Press reported details of steamy text messages between Beatty and Kilpatrick.

A conviction of lying under oath can bring up to 15 years' imprisonment.

Both Kilpatrick and Beatty testified in a trial last summer that they did not have a physical relationship in 2002 and 2003, when the messages were reportedly sent.

Page 2's preseason MLB power rankings

We know it's early.

We know there are people who think it's too early to rank the teams about to begin the 2008 Major League Baseball season. One hundred and sixty-two games left to be played, they say. Everything still up for grabs, they insist.

But these are the same people who say B12 sounds like a plausible explanation, and LiLo's nudey New York Mag shoot looks like the beginning of a real turnaround.

These people are innocents.

We know better.

Siemens holding the key to Disney's Spaceship Earth

Visitors to the newly updated Spaceship Earth ride at Epcot might experience the ride and miss the show.

Or they might experience the 26-year-old ride with a few new updates and spins, and catch the bevy of interactive games in the post-show area. And still, they might neither notice nor care about the real significance of the deal behind them, a pact that ties Walt Disney World and the global technology company Siemens AG with the kind of multifaceted partnership that illustrates how Disney World sells itself not just as a theme park but also as a marketing venue for all sorts of companies.

Siemens is a German company that generated about 68.6 billion euros (about $102 billion in today's U.S. currency) in sales last year making medical-device, power-grid, information-communication, transportation and automation and control systems, and has more than 6,000 employees in Florida, including those at the company's power headquarters on Alafaya Trail.

Megson tackles fans head on

Bolton Wanderers Supporters Association chairman Tony Pearson said "the jury is out" on Megson but called on fellow fans to give the former West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City and Nottingham Forest manager time to get things right.

"I don't know whether he has got the kind of profile we were hoping a manager would have. We have to accept it. Somebody has to take charge of the team."

Mr Pearson said the key to the club's success in the past was stability and that Megson had a clean slate because he was not associated with the Allardyce regime.

He added: "When Sam Allardyce arrived from Notts County as a manager, his credentials were not that developed at that point and look what he achieved.

"I don't think it's fair to totally write Megson off this early in his career.

That's almost 135 houses, or 29 percent, more than the town originally envisioned for this 308-acre plot near a busy stretch of Route 332. The development is part of a growth shift in Ontario County from Victor to Farmington.

But some Victor and Canandaigua residents warn that making exceptions to accommodate developers is the wrong way to go. They point to congestion and a loss of rural character that attracted many residents to their towns in the first place.

"Time and again, the site is being made to fit the development rather than the development fitting the site," said Marge Elder, chairwoman of Victor's Conservation Board.

In Victor, an example is the 106 acres of hilly, undeveloped land east of Eastview Mall. Almost all of this plot was supposed to be for housing but the scenic terrain, a kind of buffer between businesses and nearby residential neighborhoods, will be the site of three office buildings.

Miller, Bud join Mexican-style beer craze

In 2007, Miller Brewing Co. introduced Miller Chill, described as "a Chelada-style beer" blended with lime and salt. It seemed curious at first glance, and then I remembered countless Corona bottles with lime wedges stuck in their necks. Miller Chill seemed like an acceptable alternative.

A few weeks ago my Sunday newspaper showed up with a sticker announcing the arrival of Anheuser-Busch's new Chelada. This time it was both Budweiser and Bud Light mixed with Clamato, a commercially prepared blend from Mott's of reconstituted tomato juice and dried clam juice with a dash of high fructose corn syrup. The taste buds momentarily reeled until I recalled that Bloody Marys often come with a beer chaser and sometimes appear as Bloody Beer, a blend of tomato juice and brew.

The mix was different, but both beers used the same name -- Chelada -- which led to a little research.
