More on a Hillary Comeback

The Obama campaign has swamped the Clinton campaign in almost all the caucuses and probably has far more in the way of organization in Texas's 254 counties than the Clinton campaign does.

What about the other post-February contests? Here's my brief take on each:

Rhode Island primary, March 4. Clinton has done well with downscale Catholic voters, which accounts for most of the Rhode Island electorate. More like Massachusetts, which she carried, than Connecticut, which she lost. Vermont primary, March 4. Obama all the way. Wyoming county caucuses, March 8. If it's anything like Idaho, Obama. Mississippi primary, March 11. Mississippi has the highest black percentage of any state, which suggests Obama will win. But if, as in Alabama and Louisiana, a fairly large number of whites choose to participate, then Clinton could make it competitive.

Jurors see chilling photos of dead baby

After hearing the district attorney paint a grim picture of Iyonna Brown's short, poverty-filled life, a jury Tuesday morning saw graphic photo after graphic photo of the 10-month-old after she died.

Some images showed the baby's cherub face - chubby cheeks, thick, dark hair, eyes closed as though she were asleep. Her right eye appeared swollen and bruised. Another bruise had settled in above her left eye, and her chin was scraped and bruised.

Some photos showed a single leg, badly burned, the skin sloughed off. One showed her blistered and reddened genital area. Another, showed one of her eyes held open with a medical device, a spot of blood in the white of her eye.

It was a jarring start to the trial of the baby's alleged killer, Akeem Whitfield, 24, who is charged with second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter.

Airfares from USA to Europe Rise with Fuel Costs

An analysis for USA TODAY of ticket sales through Sabre, the world's largest distribution system, shows that the average price paid through Jan. 31 for U.S.-Europe air travel in April or May was 6.9% higher than during the comparable periods in 2007.

The analysis looked at round-trip sales regardless of fare categories.

Travelers are paying those higher prices despite a 10.3% expansion of trans-Atlantic flying capacity by the airlines. Typically, when the supply of a product rises, prices rise little, if at all.

Delta Air Lines, which has more service across the Atlantic than any other U.S. carrier, increased trans-Atlantic capacity 15.5% over the past year. The airline, for example, added several routes linking its Atlanta base to Vienna, Prague and other European cities.

Tea glorious tea

After 1200 years, the CHA CHING remains an important reference book and master work on the subject, right up to modern times.

The power and superiority of the more modern Maritime Silk Road lay in the greatly increased speed, safety and economy achieved by transporting merchandise by ship compared with the centuries old, slow and hazardous, overland routes. As China's traders realized the huge appetite of world markets' for tea, as well as silk and porcelain… they built impressive fleets of advanced, expertly designed merchant ships and set sail from important and rich east China ports like Quangzhou and Ningbo.

Then in 1405 to 1433, famed Chinese Admiral “Zhang He" made the first of 7 historic trading voyages, navigating his giant commercial fleets to South East Asia, Africa, Arabia and India.

Sure, that was turbulent enough, but I'm thinking about the "Super Outbreak" of tornadoes that took place across the eastern U.S. from the afternoon of April 3rd into the early morning hours of April 4th. Those twisters were spawned from a deepening area of low pressure that moved from the Rocky Mountains into the Upper Midwest. CLICK HERE for official archived weather maps from Wednesday, April 3, 1974...select day 4 from the drop down list on the upper right. That weathermaker was part and parcel of the La Nina pattern the nation was locked into at the time. Interestingly, the winter leading up to that disastrous event was mainly warm and mainly wet (sound familiar?). Bowling Green saw no measurable snowfall in the winter of '73-'74 until February 8th, when 1" fell. It's worth noting that the 1" or less of snow in our area last week turned out to be the first measurable snowfall of the season for many.

All present or accounted for, time to begin

For now, the Braves are officially staying with their earlier projection of June or July. But Cox seems open to the possibility it could be mid-June instead of around the All-Star break in July, which was the original projection.

"He's ready to go, in his mind," Cox said. "But it's going to be June, probably. The hardest thing is to tell them they can't, 'You've got to wait.' Because in their mind, they can."

Gonzalez is in camp and playing catch with throws at about 75-percent effort from 120 feet. It won't be much longer before he's on the mound. "I'm going to start throwing curveballs next week," he said.

Old home week: Tom Glavine's locker is back where it was six years ago, next to those belong to John Smoltz and Chipper Jones on seniors row just before you get to the equipment room in the Braves' spring-training clubhouse.
