39th NAACP Image Awards bring Hollywood's who's who together

*My coverage of the 39th NAACP Image Awards started a couple days before the awards show at a luncheon hosted by Tichina Arnold and Tisha Campbell-Martin to announce the nominees and sponsors. So many celebrities of color were on hand to support the NAACP, as well as the nominations.

The show, hosted by comedian/actor DL Hughley, was aired live on Fox, Valentine's day, Thursday February 14th, with a melting pot of celebrities in the audience and walking the red carpet. This year the NAACP Image Awards theme was, “stand up and be counted," and they did just that, they “counted" by honoring those nominated and those who won.

Stevie Wonder was honored with the Hall of Fame Award, Ruby Dee with the Chairman's Award, and Aretha Franklin the Vanguard Award.

Court gives evicted woman chance to repurchase home

NEWARK — A southern New Jersey woman will have a chance to regain her home because she was evicted without notification of the sheriff's sale that took her residence, a unanimous state Supreme Court ruled Thursday.

New Jersey's highest court found that Barbara Scurry should be given a reasonable amount of time to repurchase the property. She must cover the existing mortgage and interest, as well as property taxes paid by the new owner her mortgage holder since she was locked out in September 2005.

Lower courts ruled that Scurry took too long to challenge the sale to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. But the Supreme Court, in a 7-0 decision, said any harm to the USDA "simply does not match up to (Scurry) having been dispossessed of her home and belongings" without getting the required notice by registered or certified mail with return receipt, according to its opinion, written by Justice Roberto A.

FLINT, Mich. -- A Flint woman has received probation for throwing her roommate's dog off their second-floor balcony after the 9 1/2-pound Pomeranian nipped her 8-month-old daughter's cheek.

Patricia Beardsley pleaded guilty earlier to conspiracy to commit animal cruelty in exchange for dismissal of animal cruelty charges.

Reports indicate she already spent 40 days in jail.

Flint District Judge William Crawford II sentenced the 34-year-old to 18 months' probation. He ordered her to get a high school equivalency degree and take anger management classes. .

To do Monday

Martin Luther King Day parades For the first time, Tampa's big parade will visit Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in an obvious, if overdue, pairing starting at noon today. More than 15,000 spectators came to the event last year. And St. Petersburg's band-heavy parade will start off at Third Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street South at 1:15 p.m. and is expecting some 50,000 people. There's also a rally in downtown Clearwater's Coachman Park at 11 a.m.

Candlelight vigil An outdoor vigil in honor of Dr. King at 6:30 p.m. will be followed by an indoor program on nonviolence and peace at the St. Petersburg Museum of History, 335 Second Ave. NE, St. Petersburg.

Dancing with the Stars Brazilian heartthrob Helio Castroneves is back with his dancing shoes instead of his racing helmet.

No more weekends off: P’s & C’s reporting

The great L.A. Times scribe Jim Murray once said, "Spring is the time of year when the ground thaws, trees bud, the income tax falls due — and everybody wins the pennant."

And so it is that your correspondent, memorably dubbed as the faux "crusading everyman" by one of our angrier blog participants, has already done his taxes, an annual end-of-January ritual before heading to spring training and being immersed in a six-week world where normal life is put on hold and baseball takes precedence over all else.

We'll be headed down Wednesday, a day before pitchers and catchers are officially required to report. Need some time to stock the fridge of the rental house and get a lay of the land in our new neighborhood, plus stop by the ballpark at Dark Star to see how many eager Braves arrived early.
